1807- Sarah Fertig Born
Nov. 20, 1807 - source:Tombstone

Floyd's mistakenly gives her name as Franklin (See 1831 - Daughter Susanna Brouse) - it was Fertig.  This is confirmed by her and Henry receiving money from her fathers estate. Or so other historians have written - I have not yet found any probate records for Adam Fertig.

Find A Grave lists her parents as Father: Adam Fertig, Mother: Elizabeth Klein Fertig, but that Adam Fertig did not die until 1839, and she is not listed in the history books as one of his children:
Adam Fertig, father of Elias Fertig, and his brother Peter, were drafted and served in the war of 1812. He died in November 1839, aged sixty-three years. His wife was born in 1800, and died aged eighty years. They had eight children, two of whom Jacob and a sister, died in infancy. Their other children were: Michael; Anna Maria, wife of Daniel Snyder; Samuel, Elias; Clarissa, wife of John Garman, and Solomon. - Commemorative biographical encyclopedia of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania: containing sketches of prominent and representative citizens, and many of the early Scotch-Irish and German settlers.

At the bottom of this page, under research, is a scan from the Brouse Genealogy Book I found at the public library in Selinsgrove PA.  At first glance it does not list Susanna, but if you look it specifies that she is included "in the back of the book".

"Henry Geise, son of Samuel, was born Jan. 15, 1818, in Ohio, whither his father had emigrated from Mahanoy township, making the trip by wagon.
The family remained in that State only one year, however, returning to Pennsylvania and settling in Snyder county.
Mr. Geise passed his earlier years in Snyder and Union counties, operating gristmills, and about 1850 came to Point township, Northumberland county, where he engaged in farming and passed the remainder of his long life, dying July 9, 1900.
He is buried at Northumberland.
He owned his own farm of eighty-one acre, which he cultivated until his retirement, being succeeded there by his son Samuel, who is now deceased.
In religion Mr. Geise was a Lutheran.
His wife, Susanna, was a daughter of Henry and Sarah (Frederick) Brouse, of Kratzerville, Snyder county, and they were the parents of two children, Samuel and Henry F.

The former was a farmer in Point township; his children were William. Dora. Harvey, Amnion, and Anna (deceased )."  - Floyd's History Of Northumberland County

Living on family farm in Jackson, Snyder, Pennsylvania. real estate valued @ $5000. personal estate valued @ $1400.

Living with the family is George Row 20yr (a mason) Lydia Row 20yr and Sarah Row 4 months. they have no personal or real estate value.  At first I thought this was Henry's daughter Lydia, but she is already married to Solomon Kline, and has a 1 year old daughter named May.  Emmanual, son of Henry, later marries a Lydia Row - but it's not this Lydia.  It is maybe a sister of George Row here?  I'm unsure what the connection is between these families, at this time.

Research:
My concerns, as sent to another researcher:

I'm trying to sort out my Brouse/Fertig research this morning, and I'm having a lot of trouble. I'm hoping maybe you have more information than I do.

Reference - http://person.ancestry.com/tree/17141100/person/20304470894/facts

Find A Grave, and other researchers, list Adam & Elizabeth Klein as you do - as the parents of Sarah Fertig who married Henry Brouse. I find a lot of reference to Henry & Sarah receiving $204 from Adam's estate. In 1830. Which seems pretty odd, if Adam didn't die until 1839. I cannot find any probate records for an Adam Fertig - and I'm not yet sure even in which county I should be looking.

Then in the history of Dauphin County, Sarah is not listed as the child of this Adam. (The list of children is pretty different from what you, and most others, have). But so far I have not found another Adam Fertig anywhere... so I just don't know. History books are not always conclusive or accurate, Floyd's lists Sarah Fertig as Sarah Franklin, not Fertig...

I'm so confused by this family. Any input you have would be greatly appreciate!

(the reply I received was a list of find a grave entries for children, but none of it is sourced beyond find a grave)

"In 1879, my greatgreat grandmother's cousin (2nd cousin I think) killed himself. As his widow was unable to care for their young boys...Joel Percival Leitzel 6 and Enos Adam Leitzel 4 , the orphan court appointed Noah Brouse as their guardian. Noah's brother Samuel is also in the photo. (see photo at the top of the page)
The Brouse family, Row family, Leitzel family were all close, married into each other's families over many years. In fact Mary Row married one of those little boys (Joel Percival Leitzel)."

From the Find A Grave Entry for Henry's brother Adam -

Son of Henry BROUSE 1776 - 1854 and Margaret Elizabeth PONTIUS 1780 - 1860; grandson of Revolutionary Soldier JOHAN PETER "John" (Pvt.) PONTIUS 1747 - 1835 and ANNA CATHERINE BERGER 1753 - 1835, in addition both great grandfathers were recognized for their service to the Revolution

Kratzerville Zion Lutheran Church

Architectural splendor is abundant throughout the Susquehanna Valley landscape in the many houses of worship. Each week in this space, The Daily Item will feature a grandiose structure with information about its origin. Additional photos and historical information will be published about each structure featured as well as many others located in Northumberland, Snyder, Union and Montour counties. The full collection of beautiful treasures in the Valley will be published in a book titled "Domes & Spires." Look for it in September.

KRATZERVILLE -- The present Gothic-style building of brick construction known as Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church was completed in 1902. This congregation, however, began in 1790 and shared the pre-existing Hessler's Church building with a Reformed congregation, which dates back to 1783.

As early as 1810, the possibility was discussed that the two congregations formally unite in the construction of a new and larger house of worship to replace the present log structure.

On Sept. 27, 1815, a parcel of land was deeded from Jacob Herman and Abraham Brouse, trustees of the United Congregation of German Lutheran and Calvinists worshiping at Hessler's Church, to Michael Wagner for the consideration of $620.

At this time, the country was engaged in the war of 1812, and members of Hessler's congregation were serving in the military. This may be the reason why the second log structure was not begun until 1817. The new building was completed in 1818. The exact date of the consecration is not known.

The old log church was torn down in 1847. The new church was consecrated on Oct. 24, 1847. This building was of brick construction, rectangular in shape with high galleries on three sides and a raised pulpit, enabling the minister to preach to two floors. (** See photo at top of this page)

The 1847 building, referred to as Zion's Church, was used by both the Lutheran and Reformed congregations until 1901.

Amid much controversy, on May 8, 1901, ground was broken for a new Lutheran church. The land was purchased for $250. John F. Stettler, of Middleburg, was the chief architect and foreman of the project. Much of the help was volunteered by members of the congregation. The new building is a Gothic structure of brick construction with a nave of 44 by 88 feet. The building was dedicated, debt free, on Nov. 1 - 2, 1902.

Renovations over the years have included the basement being excavated for a social room in 1958. In 1989, the stained glass windows were all removed, cleaned and restored to their original beauty. On June 2, 1997, dedication services were held for the new 34- by 36-foot addition. In 2006, it was decided to restore the exterior brick and stone and treat it with a water repellent. Also in 2006, air conditioning was installed in the church. These projects were both completed on July 24, 2006.

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church now has a membership of about 880.
